Matariki Puanga Hui Tākaro Hune 30 2026

Lock it in your calendars and make sure you register early for Wellingtons largest Intermediate Ki o Rahi event!!!

To ensure all teams get 3 round robin games and Semi/finals games the event wil run from 9am till 315. Mihi whakatau welcome will start at 9.05 – Kaiwawao, tewhatewha, & coaches hui finished by 9.15. Round Robin games commence at 9.30. Finals will finish by 3. Prize giving and karakia closing by 3.15.

We are looking forward to another great day celebrating Matariki ma Puanga with taonga tākaro.

Reminder that intent of this hui tākaro is to connect and celebrate Matariki Puanga.  To grow, honour and promote taonga tākaro and the uara/values they imbue, and of course to find our Intermediate School KĪ o Rahi toa! The draw will be released closer to the time.

This is designed to provide tauira with mana enhancing opportunities.   A space to come together in the spirit of Rehia (Atua of fun and entertainment), to practice uara/values like whānaungatanga, manaaki, kaitaki, to engage with te ao Māori and have fun connecting, sharing and learning through traditional Māori play.   We ask that you promote this within your team, coaches and supporters.

Please familiarise yourself and your tauira with the following rules for this year’s hui tākaro 2025. Please note there the changes due to the size and space available for this year.   

We also encourage you to share the pūrākau of KĪ o Rahi with your tauria to gain a better understanding of why KĪ o Rahi was created, the characters involved,  the layout, rules and the values our embedded in taonga tuku iho https://tumatauora.org/toanga-takaro/the-purakau-of-rahitutakahina/ 

We appreciate that many players, coaches and kaiwawao/refs are still relatively new to KĪ o Rahi and ask that all kura to show aroha to tautoko them.

The rules are below. We are awaiting confirmation for our kaiwawao but please have someone from your kura ready help kaiwawao on the day and encourage all players to be tewhatewha, self reffing and reminder to us al that the kaupapa is based on whakapono, honesty, integrity and mana enhancing behaviours.

There will be a TATU to decide on 2 or 3 kaitiaki and also if 2 point shots from outside of TE ROTO will be allowed.

We will look at introducing the power play form a kick off, but not if it is thrown, more to follow…

We are promoting taonga tākaro, so we are dropping ‘paper-scissors-rock’ to see who chooses which team starts. We will be playing whanowhano or whakaropiropiai, both tākaro tawhito, traditional Māori kēmu. We will send more instructions on these closer to the time.

To help cover some of the cost fo the event there is an entry fee of $100 +gst.
