Ko Wai Mātou/About Us

Kia Ora, Naumai Haere mai. Welcome to Tū Mātau Ora.

Tū Mātau Ora is founded on the vision of Mātauranga Māori informing positive outcomes for individuals, communities and our environments.

We share Taonga Tākaro (traditional Māori games and activities) as a fun, safe way for everyone to engage in Māori customs and culture.

Tākaro offers a unique and supportive environment to learn and experience Māori values and concepts. Providing an alternative pathway into te Ao Māori, the Māori world.

Kura/school Programme

We have been sharing taonga tākaro with thousands of students across many kura/schools, ages and areas.

This feedback sums up the sentiment from a lot of tauira and kaiako (students and teachers) so far and shows people connecting to Māori culture in positive ways.

“There are so many potential areas of society that can benefit from this kaupapa” Programme evaluator

Mihi nunui ki a Nuku Ora for your ongoing support with this in school kaupapa. It really is helping more people get more active more often!

Bicultural Leadership

We are part of a transformational leadership development kaupapa where we share mātauranga Māori uara (values) and selected tikanga (protocols) and important concepts to rangatiratanga Māori leadership such as whanaungatanga and kaitiakitanga.

Ngā mihi nunui ki a Nuku Ora for making this leadership development opportunity available, not just to sports organisations, but the wider community.

We highly recommend this leading teams course to anyone who aspires to becoming a better leader in any area of life.

We have seen how engaged people can be with the simple things, like a good old fashioned wooden spinning top or pōtaka. Seen below is a pōtaka tā where the whip is used to keep it going.

There are plenty of games and activities that you can play, challenge and share with friends and whānau of all ages and abilities.

For schools and budding scientists, pōtaka provides great opportunities to merge mātauranga Māori with various western scientific principles particularly around physics.

We are proud to share these taonga at affordable prices, using recycled pine and repurposed native tibers.
