Poi Patu

Patu means to hit. Poi Patu means to hit or be hit by the poi.

The object of Poi Patu is to hit your opponent (with your Poi Toa) while not getting hit.

Players keep count how many times they patu/hit their opponent.

We recommend 2x players, but Poi Patu can be played with 3x players if numbers are odd.

Ture – Rules

Only hit below the hope (hips)

Do NOT hit the Upoko/Māhunga (head)

Do NOT hit hard (hurting is NOT having fun)

Opponents must be hit by the Ki (head) of the Poi Toa.

1x Poi Toa per player

The person with the most patu/hits is the Toa!

Encourage participants to practice different tactics and a variety of swings for both offense and defense.

Encourage manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga.

Poi Patu is a great way to warm up for Poi Taua!
